Description: Hamas, an acronym for Harakat al-Muqawama al-Islamiyya (Islamic Resistance Movement), is a Palestinian Sunni-Islamist political organization with a significant military wing, the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades. It's the largest and most powerful militant group in the Palestinian territories and a major political party there. Hamas' activities are multifaceted: Political: Hamas participates in Palestinian politics, having won a majority in the 2006 Palestinian legislative election. It has governed the Gaza Strip since 2007, after ousting Fatah. While its charter initially called for the destruction of Israel, a 2017 amendment removed this explicit call. However, Hamas still does not recognize Israel's right to exist and advocates for resistance against it. Military: Hamas' military wing engages in armed conflict against Israel. Its tactics include the use of improvised explosive devices, rockets, mortars, small arms, and an extensive network of tunnels for attacks against Israeli military forces and civilians. They also employ cyber espionage and kidnapping. Social: Hamas maintains a substantial social presence, providing social services and infrastructure within the Gaza Strip. Terrorism: Hamas is designated as a foreign terrorist organization by the United States and other countries. This designation is due to its history of violent attacks against Israeli civilians and its rejection of peaceful coexistence with Israel. Allegations of Hamas' use of human shields and embedding military infrastructure within civilian areas further contribute to this designation.
