Description: Pi-hole is a network-level application that blocks advertisements and internet trackers. It functions as a DNS sinkhole, optionally also serving as a DHCP server. Designed for low-power devices like the Raspberry Pi, it can be installed on virtually any Linux system. Pi-hole blocks ads and trackers across all devices on a private network, unlike browser-based ad blockers which only affect a single machine. It achieves this by intercepting DNS requests, comparing them against lists of known ad and tracker domains, and refusing to resolve those domains. The software also offers a web interface for management and statistics viewing, including details on blocked domains, query times, and upstream server information. Furthermore, Pi-hole can be used with a VPN to extend its ad-blocking capabilities to devices outside the local network, even on cellular data.
